PCBs in our GHD Repair Workshop
For the simple reason we usually repair 99% of MK3 MK4 MK5 MS and SS GHD Straightener series PCBs, we are in fact automatically recycling them.
If we were using ‘scrap’ PCBs (or donor boards) to recover parts and repair other PCBs, we would increase non-recycled ones right?
Certainly using donor boards is better than doing nothing and sometime necessary, as most other businesses do.
In ‘trying’ to repair them all, we increase recycling factor and reduce scrap to a minimum.
We try our best and it mostly depend on spares availability and quality.
This is probably the only reason we might be forced to scrap a PCB – ‘quality, availability and price’ of spares.

Of course if one uses covers/arms to replace cracked ones from a faulty GHD, well PCBs would be repaired and re-sold or used to replace those hat have been destroyed by mains arching and ‘safely unrepairable’ important areas!
Our GHD Repair Workshop, usually tends to use new covers and arms if possible and yes, although this tends to increase ‘plastic’, it also reduce scrapped PCBs!

We try our best, while at the same time we need to keep our Small Business Economically Viable.

We might sometime mention online repairs, etc.
DO NOT SEND YOUR GHD TO US – we do not do repairs by mail order, at present – but we might add it in the future

We repair GHD 3, GHD 4, GHD IV Styler, GHD 5, MS and SS series since 2009
If it has a Lever Switch and not a Touch one, we should be able to repair it for you.

Most repairs are carried out within 1 hour, if we are not too busy and you bring it in the morning – we have a few nice Italian and English Coffee shops where you can wait while your GHD repair is carried out.

Notes: If we do not have any interruption, while repairing within 1 hour, we will do the 30 minutes test.
But if you are in a rush and want it repaired fast, then when you go home please switch them on a non-flammable surface and leave them on for 30 minutes, after that they should switch themselves in stand-by and stop heating and LED should be slow blinking at about 1 blink per second – that is a safety feature and they may emit a beep once it gets into that state.
Please also note: blinking and beeping may differ from model to model and after any repair – this is ‘normal’ behaviour – just learn the new beeps.

That is why we do not rush our repairs – safety is important.

If needed, we will take the whole hour or longer with those that have more than the usual 1 to 3 faults – because we try to be as thorough as possible. See Standard Repair Meaning

Any GHD Repair cost shown on our website is for electrical faults Professional Repair and excludes any cosmetic repair – please ask.

See our repair procedure (it may change depending on circumstances)

We DO NOT repair GHD6 (S7N261) and newer.

Sometime Refurbished GHD Straighteners might be available with ‘usually’ a 3 months guarantee (electrical problems only).

For as long as spares are available, we repair GHD MK3, MK4, IV, MK5, MS, SS series – just communicate here

** GHD Repair Durham – WARNING – Hear a crackling noise? **

STOP using your GHD now and disconnect from mains!
There must be a mains discharge (arcing) inside your GHD Straighteners or cable, which can be dangerous – especially with wet-hair, but it is repairable.

GHD REPAIR DURHAM – GHD ‘professionally’ repaired by qualified Electronics Technician

After we repair them, we will do our usual series of tests and including PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) & you can keep them for a very long time – better than pay for a new one – our prices reflect our strive for Professionalism – we also use one of our microscopes (when needed), to check for any invisible to the eye problems on PCBs and repair them.

The reasons we repair GHD Straighteners from version 3 to version 5 – i.e. MK3 MK4 IV MK5 MS and SS series only are:

GHD repairs near me – Our Repair procedure

Our Repair procedure:
1. aesthetic assessment (we check cable for any sign of mains leaks, body fro micro cracks, etc. )
2. we open it and start a series of measurements starting from the Mains Plug – also check for internal body, etc. cracks
3. we replace whichever electrical or electronic parts is needed – if body needs replacement we will inform you prior any work is done with new estimate
4. when repair is done, we do some functional tests before re-assembly and leave it on for a while and test automatic stand-by – including temperature check (unless you are in a hurry, you must do that check yourself at home – important)
5. other usual checks and re-assembly
6. Final re-check of external body, mains cable etc.
7. P.A.T. (Portable Appliance Testing) – ASK for it when you have GHD repaired elsewhere!
8. some cleaning
Done !
Note: repaired GHD might have different Beeping than you are used to – functionality does not change – check it out to learn the new sounds and also our repair procedure may change from time to time – to improve it.

** IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION **
This information may change from time to time – using it is ‘your’ responsibility – see our terms of use!

Please note: some GHD can ‘sporadically’ overheat for various reasons, even with all its safety feature ‘tested’ fine, it can still happen.
Power surges, a cracked/split ceramic heater (not easy to see) or IC controller failure (mostly due to power surges), heater thermostatic failing (even ‘after’ being repaired) and allowing higher temperatures until fail-safe acts – even just dropping your, GHD could cause this problem.
Power surges can often happen in Holiday places, caravan places, GHD powered with petrol/diesel generators, local electrical working progress and anywhere else with unstable mains.
Also your home mains-ring for various reasons such as bad weather or/and Power Grid overloads, a loose mains connection/wall socket, especially after a power downs, as powering up, can create surges. We cannot in any way be held responsible for any accident.
Our repaired or refurbished GHDs are all multi-tested before handing it back to customers and we do not use those ‘non-trustable cheap’ infrared thermometers – we use Thermocouples with electronic controller, that reads at +/- 5°C max error or less – sometime and if needed, we even use 2 of them for comparison!
Any component can fail after repair, even if they all tested OK during repair, thermal control sensor might fail at any time without obvious clues – micro power-surge is one!

W
e strongly suggest you to always test your GHD prior ‘each’ usage, over a tiny edge of your hair before you use it – it only takes 20-40 seconds to heat up in full and 2-3 seconds to test. Our Qualified Electronics Technician always check/test its full functionality and temperature after any repair – see our summed-up repair procedure.
GHD also have a fail-safe of 30 minutes – i.e. it switches itself in stand-by mode after 30 minutes continuously on (heaters off).LED behaviour may change depending on models, but it generally goes to a slower flashing of possibly 1s and may change colour. Please test it, so you will know for certain.NEVER use ‘any’ hair irons/straighteners with wet hair. Try and keep your hair only damp.

GHD also have an internal Thermal fail-safe which opens circuit when temperature reaches 240°C or more.
Normal operations temperature can vary a bit depending on models and even if Thermal fail-safe go open circuit, temperature might have gone much higher in a few seconds, than 240°C before safety acts, as fail-safe will not act instantly – it would easily reach 260-280°C by Thermal Inertia and even after it opens circuit and stops electricity supply.

Therefore, due to thermal inertia (yes, that!), as metal aluminium plates have a very high heat conductivity (their ability to conduct heat), they keep heating up (heat transfer) for a few seconds.

Once again, we always recommend to test on a small tip of your hair first.
